The port was designed and built to provide tourists and locals with various types of marine and cultural amenities. Located opposite the Olympic Village, the port was built in 1991. Architects Oriol Bogigas, Josep Martorel, David Mackay, and Albert Pudjomen all worked on this project. As host of the Olympics, the city was required to build a sports marina according to the strict standards for sailing competitions specified for the 1992 Olympic Games. The harbor now houses 740 yachts and its entrance is visible from all parts of Barcelona.
Two skyscrapers, the Mapfre tower and the Arts Hotel with the gorgeous sculpture of Frank Gehry's goldfish, lie next to the Gran Casino de Barcelona. In the Olympic Port, two of Barcelona’s most famous beaches can be found, Barceloneta and Nova Icària, which are only 300 meters from the nearest metro station, Ciutadella Vila Olímpica.
The port is open to the public on weekdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 19:00 and on weekends and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:30. The nearest metro stop is also L4 (Ciutadella - Port Olímpic) or L1 (Marina), and the bus lines with stops here are 36, 45, 59, and 71.
