Spanish universities offer a worldwide famework due to their ancient academic traditions. The first universities and their predecessors were founded during the times of the Arabic conquests. Nowadays, Spain is considered to be among the most desired studying destinations for students from all over the world. This information does not come as a surprise, since Spanish universities attract students with their great diversity in programs of study, high-quality and top educational programs, affordable prices, prestigious diplomas, and, of course, the possibility to live in this unique and hospitable Mediterranean country.
The Ministry of Education of Spain actively seeks to attract foreign students to the country. For instance, in 2014, the government confirmed the Strategy of Internationalization of the Spanish educational system and the universities of Spain. By 2020, the country plans to refurbish and improve the work of its universities, and, as a result, to increase the flow of talented foreign students. It should be mentioned that in order to help realize the above-mentioned strategy, Spanish universities offer additional programs and separate courses with instruction in the English language.
One can pursue a university degree both in the public universities of Spain and in the private universities. Almost all Spanish universities offer degrees in three educational levels, or cycles: Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs. Apart from these traditional degrees, there is a great variety of post-graduate courses and courses without degrees (continuing education, or qualification-upgrading, courses). All the programs of the Spanish universities are developed with consideration for the requirements and standards of the European Higher Education Area and are recognized in Europe and in other parts of the world, including the USA. The presence of the Spanish universities in the world rankings of top universities serves as confirmation of the high quality of a Spanish education.
As a rule, the academic calendar, or studying year, in the universities of Spain is divided into semesters. Some universities prefer to work based on the trimester system. The beginning of the studying year is the end of September to the beginning of November; the end is the period from June to July. The form of studying in the public and private universities of Spain can be full-time, on-line, or a mixture. International students should take into account that practically all universities are closed for vacations in August, and therefore, it is recommended to start the admission paperwork in advance.

Private Universities in Spain
Private Universities in Spain are different from the public universities due to the form of financing they obtain from governmental sources and from various private structures, including the Catholic Church. The educational programs of the private universities in Spain are developed according to all the standards of the Bologna process, and are almost identical to the programs of the public universities. Absolutely all private universities in Spain have the requisite governmental accreditation, and many are included in the rankings of the top Spanish universities. The unique feature of the private universities in Spain is their strong business connections that enable their students to gain professional internships throughout the duration of their studies. Moreover, the private universities in Spain employ an individual approach for each student. The process of admission into the private universities may vary, and, very often, is less complicated than the admission process for public universities. The majority of the private universities are recently established institutions, but this is not a negative feature; their rankings show this is a positive one. Below, you can fine a list of the private universities in Spain.
