Ca la Dona is a space dedicated to women, where various associations hold events and shape or develop the feminist positions on important issues. Representatives of the Catalan feminist movement and technical and architectural specialists have contributed to the overall development of the building design and its concept. Over the course of a hundred working meetings, experts from various disciplines have collaborated to define the image of Ca la Dona as “an open space for dialogue and participation” as well as “a space for action and boosts in critical thinking,” which also are expected to facilitate new business connections.
The new center for Barcelona’s feminist vanguard will feature a facility for documentation, legal assistance services, and a gallery aimed to inspire women to contribute to the development of creative projects. Moreover, the building terrace will become the site of a city garden.
The building enhancement is a project of the City Heritage Program. This is an initiative of the mayor’s office designed to encourage the public use of governmental edifices.
An organized feminist movement has been active in Catalonia since at least 1975.
